Okay... if one had some sort of exotic design for a blade, that they wanted to make, but didnt have the ability to cut it for themselves, what options would they have when it comes to getting the pattern cut?

TIA. :)

[Edited fer an grammatical errur ;) :p]

You could send a CAD drawing to Admiral Steel and they'd laser it out. HA! Not for one blade I bet.

I haven't tried this but have considered it, using one of those tile saws that's basically just a cable with carbide fused to it strung in a coping saw frame... Cuts tile just fine and you could get pretty tight radii out of it. Home Depot, cheap and lasts forever.

Or you could use a jeweler's saw, which would probably be the more standard method now that I think of it. But it wouldn't be much fun.

The "cost" of doing something like this is why we end up doing it ourselves!

get a blade magazine. In the back there is an ad for a company that does water jet cutting. The ad says that they'll do one blade or a hundred and that they will even do a cad drawing etc. depends on how much you want to spend.

Admiral actually would do the single blade of what I want... for $160 plus shipping!!
And I'd have to use 3/16" instead of 1/4" :barf:

Thats why I am looking for other options...

I'll dig through my Blade issues, see if I find that ad.
How long these folks been running their ad?
all the Blade magazine's I have are a couple years old, last new one I bought was in Nov. and I left it for the hospital to stock their magazine table with by accident

the tile cutter... hmmm... sounds interesting... I'll look into it.

Anything else?

Thanks guys. :)

Your local welding shop has a plasma cutter. They can cut just about on your line, and probably charge you $5 or $10.

Buy the steel.
Use or borrow a power hand drill. Buy a drill bit 3/16ths or 1/4" should do. Draw the outline on the steel. Drill a zillion holes all around the outline. Use or borrow a hack saw to cut it out. File it down to the outline you want. Jerry Hossum can jump in here and point you to the Jonesy cheapskate way to make a knife. He's hosting the pictures now I think.

its not to elaborate, just the integral "D-guard" bolo I mentioned in another thread... 15 inches overall, 9 inch blade, squared off integral "D-guard"

the problem for me is the cut out for the d-guard :p
I'm not as capable to do that as I thought I was when I said I'd undertake the project (I know, it was a major F-up on my part.. mis-calculated what I could and couldnt do :o... * at myself*.)

I'll figure out something.
talked to him tonight, he said he would think about possible revisions to the design to make it more do-able... so we'll see.

no bandsaw... no drill press... :barf: life sucks. :p

[Edited to say, Thanks to Bill Burke for the info. :)]

Theres an ol'boy that lives close to me that makes knives out of old round saw mill blades, some of them are up to 1/4" thick. He will take a dremel with a metal cutting wheel and go around the entire shape of the blade shape he wants, just scoring the saw blade, then take vise grips and start wiggling the metal close to the score, he says they will crack and pop right out. I've never seen him do it, but he tells me this is how he does it, he said this way he doesn't have to heat treat from taking all the temper out of the blade and when grinding just keeps a bucket of water close to keep things cool.

Good Luck

Bill

You can drill the holes out with a hand drill and break out the webs with a dremal tool or file or hacksaw blade...
Just get the creatice juices flowing and try something.A jigsaw with a metal cutting blade in it will work also.Lots of ways to do it.
