Cutting Ceramic Glass?

I was finally able to acquire a ceramic glass liner for the flat platen on my KMG from USA Knife Maker. My platen is 8"x2", which is exactly the dimensions for the glass I received. I would like to try the method of installation using a ledge with outdoor double sided tape, which I've read is used by some makers here on the forum. Since my platen and glass are the same dimensionally, I will need to cut the glass somehow. I'm thinking a 3/4" ledge should suffice, which will require a 3/4" trim of the glass. My question is......can I score and snap this glass like any other glass? I suppose I should of asked Tracy when I ordered it, but I didn't think about it at the time. I'm hoping someone here may know. Thanks for your input.

Grind it off with an 80 grit ceramic belt. A 1/4" wide ledge is plenty.

I have to trim mine a few inches cause It's a bit long, I thought I would just use a cutting wheel on a angle grinder.. Is that at all possible without totally shattering or cracking the ceramic glass?

Stan hasn't steared me wrong yet so I'd say grind it. I just put mine on the other day and what a dramatic improvement. I cracked it on my first day though, through normal grinding, too. :( Oh well. Still works.

I tried grinding a piece at one point on a 80 grit norton belt and was getting no where. I'm not sure if my 2x42 was running to fast? It seemed to glaze the belt over. I ended up ordering another piece of shorter glass.

I just replaced the glass on mine about 3-4 weeks ago. Used a fresh 80 grit Norton Norzon belt running just about wide open. I really does not grind into dust but more will melt it off in stringers, Gloves and eye protection are highly recommended.

Stan if you dont mind me asking, about how long does the platen last? Also what is your preferred method for attachment? I have heard a lot of guys use jbweld.

Last one ha, do you need to ground yourself with a glass platen? I have read the static electricity built up is pretty nuts sometimes.

Thanks in advance!

I cut my glass with a diamond cutt off wheel in the dremel.
I cut it at an angle to have it dovetailed

My last glass platen lasted about 3 years. I use the 3M Outdoor Heavy duty double sided tape. Being in SE Texas close to Gulf I usually don't have a problem, when the humidity gets real low in the winter (all month of it:D) I use anti static spray.

I lined my platen with glass from Knifemakers. I used a diamond saw to cut it to length and polished the sides. I took my platen apart so that I could get a good, flat fit. It looked really good. Of course, when I re-assembled the platen and gave the wrench that last little turn---CRACK. I was pi$$ed. I could feel the crack when running my finger over the platen.

I fixed it by taking a flat diamond sharpening stone and sanding the glass platen till it was level. Doesn't look that great, but it worked. ...Teddy

Thank you for your input gentlemen. I'd forgotten that I have a diamond blade for my circular saw, so I will be using it to trim the glass based on your suggestions.
