This year I plan to host a sword cutting competition on November 13 and 14 at the Texas Renaissance Festival near Houston.

The game will be heavy cutting only. Twenty Bugei wara, individually rolled and soaked from 36 to 48 hours, will be arranged in a staggered formation on a four foot long stand. I will be offering a prize of $2000 to the swordsman who cuts the most mats with a single strike. The game is open to all styles of sword and swordsmanship, with a limit of no sword having an overall length greater than 6 feet. Only completely severed mats will count.

Entry fee will be $200 with a limit of 20 contestants. Each entrant gets one swing only unless there is a tie, in which case there will be a "cut off". Entrant is one swordsman and one sword. Another combination of sword and swordsman may be considered as a separate entry.

Hey Daniel,

This sounds like fun, and I wish I had a sword that I could practice with. Unfortunately I have no good way of getting practice in, and I won't be in the country anyway (I will be in Taiwan from September until next June), but I'll forward this on to some buddies who may be interested.

I'd post on SFI too but I can't seem to get it to load today. Very strange. Some folks there may not like you and some other folks don't like me, but they do have the membership and a bunch of people who might be interested.

Yeah, it looks like a fun challenge Daniel! I looked at some of your videos on your homepage...that is one *BiG* taco Dude. Nice cut.

I'd love to play if my style did not forbid paticipating in competitions. I have family in Texas and it'd be a good excuse for a road trip and to try out a rather brutal 5160 katana I hope to have completed by then.

Good luck and may the best man win....are you cutting, Daniel? :)

I probably will cut as a demonstrator, but I do not plan to be cutting as an official competitor. I want to avoid any conflict of interest.

That's a long way to go for me! Thanks for the info though because it gives me something to work toward...any other targets in the future?

knowing how daniel is I bet this is just the tip of the ice berg...in 2007 I'll be living in the US and hope to meet daniel and I'm sure enter one of his comps.
