Cutting Competition

pic, DIJ?

Yeah, Mark - there are still many cutting comps around...this one has been "in the works" for a while...mostly for folks who had nice knives and wanted to test them, but didn't make them themselves. (the ABS comps had strict rules) There's also Pro and Amateur categories. Neat stuff.

The first rule of Cut Club is that we don't talk about Cut Club.

The second rule of Cut Club is that we don't talk about Cut Club!

Nine bottles sounds difficult. What are the size restrictions on the knife?

For the ABS it was;

total length: 15" max
blade : 10"max
width: 2"max
handle : 5" max

At least one pin showing and a hole for a safety lanyard. Dan, or anyone, correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure that is it.

It seems to me that the knifemakers should be able to choose who tests their knives.

Isn't it possible that he/she may be an incredible knifemaker, but have a terrible arm for swinging? Or hate crowds? Which means their knife, perhaps the best one in the competition, will never win.

At Blade this summer, I remember looking at Daniel Winkler, even before he cut anything, and thinking his shoulder looked tight. Seemed like there was a bit of tension in there somewhere. In that scenario, it means the knife isn't really being tested to its limits at all... ?

yes - this was one of the main arguments toward adding a "user" category to the cutting competition. People wanted the ABS to do it, but they didn't want to compromise their tradition of self-forged, self-tested knives. (just stating the facts, not taking sides)

So, the ICCT was formed to compensate for this. There are also knifemakers that do no forging at all but make a dang nice knife (Jerry Hossum, for example). He was excluded from the ABS cutting competitions because he didn't forge. But he can compete in the ICCT.

There is a lot more to this that I don't have time to get into...if anybody is curious or has questions - feel free to ask here or via email.
