cutting fluids

First, I'm not a metals guy, but I hope a metals guy explains.

I've tried all sorts of stuff while handsanding (except cool lube that I hope to get soon). Mineral Oil, WD40,...

One thing I've tried is Ed's Red - gun cleaning stuff. There are 2 ways to mix it: with and without acetone. I've been using the non-acetone type - it's OK for sanding (great for cleanup.) Today I tried the acetone version. Absolute WOW :D :D

It's incredible. Either I'm getting better at handsanding or this stuff is amazing (unlikely it's me).

Here's the mix, very simple, equal parts of:

Deodorizded Kerosene
Mineral Spirits
Dexron ATF
Acetone

I don't know the chemistry behind this (or cutting fluids for that matter) but the effect is wonderful. The paper cuts much faster and produces a very consistent, clean hand rubbed finish. In the mix are 2 polar and 2 non-polar solvents. However, I don't think it's the solvents that produce the effect. There are also "... additives in ATFs which include organometallic antioxidants and surfactants, make it highly suitable for inclusion in an all-purpose cleaner-lubricant-preservative." What?

The acetone thinned the mixture quite a bit and the paper makes a slurry in a hurry. You feel a big difference in the cutting action.

So what is the idea behind cutting fluids?

Steve

If you care to try it, please! read the mixing instructions.

They are used most frequently for threading they do the same thing as oil in your engine; to clean cool and lubricate. They prevent tool grabbing and heat buildup. For sanding they float the particles and allow the grit to be in better contact with the surface. Wet sanding will always perform better than dry.IMO

I use Cool Tool II. It has a smell I can tolerate, and works very well. It also wipes off easy. When I run out of this, I'll use any 10-weight or lower oil. Some folks use baby oil I believe. Ideally? A constant trickle of water would most likely work the best.

Just plain old WD40, sometimes Windex or =. They work for me.

Itrade, that is some mixture. I hope you're wearing rubber gloves, and a good respirator when using that. Acetone can absorb through the skin, as well as the lungs.
