I’d like to start cutting my own inlay shields and parser plates. I haven’t got the room for a huge, full size pantograph machine like I’ve seen some use. Is there a “desktop” machine that would do the job and I wouldn’t have to sell another child or kidney to buy?

With some ingenuity and modification skills, you can take an old New Hermes engraving pantograph and use it. You need one with the power head pully groove on the quill holder. Yu can find one with nbo type and maybe needing some parts for as little as $100.
There are parser type quills that are made to cut wood and plastic. Somewhere I have a box of them.

This is the top half of one on Ebay that has most of what you need. He wants $300, which I doubt he will get.

Bill said it. I use them as well and they are top notch. Much easier and much less room than a panto as well.

Not that there is anything wrong with pantograph engraving machines! I have 3 of them.
