Cutting Ivory?

What do you makers use to cut ivory? I have it in large sizes and am thinking of getting a band saw. My guess is a metal cutting saw would be best since they have a lower sfm and a finer tooth blade. Am I on the rite track?

Thats what I use Tom. Whatever you do avoid heat, if it gets warm to the touch, stop and let it cool. Some makers I know hand saw their Ivory to avoid heat altogether.

Thaks for the info guys.

Darrel,

It is fossil Mammoth as well as fossil Walrus. Here is another question. Since it is a few million years old is drying still an issue? I am planning on selling both as well as Jade. Which brings me to another question. Has anyone ever worked with Jade?

Regards,

Tom Carey

Mammoth doesn't have to be that old, the last ones died about 6000 years ago (but most 4000 years earlier), so I don't think it's fossilized in the meaning it's been turned completely to stone.

Drying is an issue. I know some collectors have their knives in climate controlled areas for this reason, and I've been recommended to oil the handles to keep them from cracking.

I just wrote a long post about jade and now it strikes me it ought to be in a new thread, so that's where I'm posting it.
