Got my first bar stock of Stellite. Planning on making some non ferrous folders. Need some help with best ways to cut out blade shape from flat bar stock. I have tried a few thing including cut off wheel. Dremel with certain bits seem to do better, but it will take time. Don't have a bandsaw, and was told not to try that anyway. Anyone with experience let me know how you cut shapes out. Don't really want to take it to waterjet or machine shop. Thanks in advance.

I hope this isn't supposed to be a "do it by hand" project? You will never hand file that stuff and by the way when it seemed to be popular to give it a try several years back I and several others found it to be very poor in use as a knife.
However, if you can get a cut off blade for a saw and watch it doesn't melt the saw, that will work for cutting.

Where did you get it from. I have been wanting to get some to play with. But for cutting I would try a plasma cutter, but I have one of thoes. If you don't then the best bet might be to talk to a water jet guy and have him cut out your shapes. If you decide you don't want it or can't work with your bar let me know I could trade you some 15n20 for it.

No, definitely not a do it by hand, I have some tools to use. Definitely would not use a file haha! And I have used it in other knives before, quite a few knives and it is one of my favorite blade metals!

I may have to water jet the shapes out, we will see. This place American metal xchange usually has some. Heads up, it is expensive!! And yes, xchange is spelt like that when you google it. And it is under their supplies section. http://shop.amxinc.com/KNIFE-MATERIALS_c9.htm

It is a VERY different metal, nothing similar to the steels I like at all! But, I love the stuff.

I don't know if it would be effective on Stellite, but when I run into a tough one, I break out my hand grinder with a 4 1/2" diamond blade on it--maybe worth a try??

For sure the usual cutting discs will work on it.Not needing to heat treat draws people to try. Certainly a poor choice for edge holding in my opinion.
