I have a nice piece of Pa. tigereye jasper, about a 1/4" and the size of a open hand, really nice for a set of slabs. What is the best way to get the cut? Don't have much equip., so, a stone mason?

Thanks,

Dave

Find someone with lapidary equipment. Tigereye is microcrystalline quartz with asbestos fibers in it and it is way too hard to work with knifemakers equipment.

Would one of those diamond-bladed wet-bath tile saws work?

Mike, it would work for near rectangular cuts, but to get rounded or complex shapes, more specialized grinders and polishing equipment would be needed.

Cutting stone, especially chatoyant ones,is another thing from steel and wood. Most of the equipment you have won't do any good. You may find a lapidary in a local gem and mineral society who will do the cutting and polishing for you.You will have to work with him (or her) a lot to get a good handle. - Stacy

There are diamond blades that fit in an angle grinder. I was at a place that does granite and marble countertops today and that is what they use to cut the hole for your sink, cut notches and trim for exact fit. At the shop, they use a big one fit in a chop saw. I think that I saw some of these blades at my local Home Depot. I don't know if they only work for cutting or if they can be used for shaping also. I will ask the crew that comes to install the countertop in a few weeks.
