I've read a lot over the years the reasons for carrying a pocketknife; cutting food, opening mail/boxes, sharpening pencils, etc. Often, people mention cutting string. Where do you find string? I haven't needed to cut string in about 20 years; bakeries no longer wrap packages in string, the usps won't let you put string on packages..Where do you find string?

its called line, and I have it on all my fishing reels. :D

Kidding. Usually the only time I have to cut string is when tying something down at Lowes or Home Depot. They have the boxes of cheap nylon string for you to tie down loads, etc.

I do a lot of gardening, both flower and vegetable, and I use garden twine to tie plants to supports, encourage vines to begin climbing, lash poles together to form temporary supports, etc. Also, my solid waste removal company will take brush if it's tied in 3-foot long bundles. Besides that, my only use for string is to cut a piece and tie something to it to tease the cats with.

I use my knives camping and backpacking and frequently need to cut rope. I usually carry 3 or 4 mm rope on backpacking trips, which is about the same size as string.

i work in a cemetary and one of my jobs is cutting weed eater cord for the guys everyday in the summer.you need a good sharp strong knife to cut 105 weedeater string:)

He he, new yo-yo strings always come long so that you can cut them to your preferred length...

Now seriously, maybe most people don't cut string often but others do depending on their daily activities, like I do braids and decorative knots as a hobby and often cut string and thread, I know people who use string tied tight between poles to mark straight lines as guides in gardening and construction, surely there are many other uses.

You know that stuff that you tie a kite to? String (aka kite string). Maybe someone should write a book, 1001 uses for string in 2006. How about "String someone up." Fish stringer... string with fish on it. Brick layers use lots of string to keep their rows straight and level. We just have a lot more materials available these days that string is often not the first choice. String is used for laying a floor to keep things straight. Without string where would we be?

String is so important that cosmologists, who study the origin of the universe, have developed an entire view of reality called "String Theory".

slicing up a piece of string
seems like such a wasteful thing

i'd rather just untie the knot
but that's not why a knife i've got

Loose threads hanging from clothing or furniture. That's majority of the string I'll encounter.
Beat me to it.

At work, sometimes a bundle will be tied with string as well.

To tell you the truth, I can't recall the last time I had to cut any string. But at least once a day I use one of my knives to get open that d--- plastic packaging that defeats my teeth and nails!

As I was coming out of a restaurant about three weeks ago, a lady was putting on display a bundle of promotional brochures, tied with string. When she asked if I had a knife, I cut the string for her.

Two days ago - in a hurry to take the tarp off my boat to get to the river. Cut the strings holding the tarp.

Two days ago - cut old trotline off my outboard prop.

One week ago - cut line to tie down a load of scrap lumber on my pickup.

String trembles at the sound of my knife flipping open.:D

I use some wire strippers to cut the weadeater string for mine

For me, it's just a good reason to carry a knife ;) I may not meet an angry string, but the cop doesn't know this.

I don't cut string much, but on more than a few occasions I've used my knife to cut the plastic straps that hold newspapers together (to buy them).
