Ive made two or three pocket sheaths for some of my knives and so far ive been using rivets. I want to try stitching some leather (ive got a stitching awl) but ive been afraid the knives will cut through the stitches. Have any of you ever cut through the stitching on your sheaths? How do you prevent it?

Cut a piece of leather so that it is the same shape as your sheath and cut out the shape of your knife within it so that you have a space for the knife sandwich it between the front and back pieces of your sheath the leather will block the blade from hitting the stitching. you should do that if you using rivets aswell.

Sorry if its hard to understand what im saying, its hard to explain:p. if you watch a few youtube videos on it you will know what to do

search for any sheath making tutorial and they show how to make a welt, the welt keeps from cutting the stitches.

Check out the picture below. That piece of leather around the knife blade is the "welt" There are lots of tutorials on the bladeforums site, and also on the net. That piece of leather prevents the stitching from being cut, because the sharp edge of the blade comes in contact with it, instead of the stitching.

I also recommend a true double stitch, and not a hook and loop. If the stitching is cut, it won't loosen up on you.

On a pocket style sheath you need an internal or external welt depending on which way your carrying it. This one has an internal welt in the middle, Kind of a pain to sew though.
