I wanted something a little different for a BK-16 I am gifting a friend, along with a few other items, as a graduation gift. She is an avid outdoors-person who spends a lot of time hiking and camping. She is into survival studies and is in the process of starting several experiments in her area. One of her favorite colors for gear is orange. So since I already know Joe Snarski of LMF Knives makes very nice scales for several knives, and I have bought several sets from him, I contacted him about making a set of tweener scales for me out of some tangerine burlap micarta from Shadetree Custom Composites. Then a set of camouflage micarta ones for me. They turned out very nicely, so I thought I'd share a few pics here. Joe did an excellent job on the contours and fit and finish of them. I will add is some more detailed photos later on.

Joe does not yet have a website, only face book. However he will do email correspondence and can send image samples of his work.

Sick brother. I have been admiring his work for some time now. I just got a Condor primitive bush knife in, and the handles are quite narrow. I'm thinking of having him make some thicker ones for me. I saw a set he did for one, and they looked killer.

I do have a couple of sets too, one is for a full sized and the other one for a tweener, both are great, this guy adds lots of detail on his work, plus his customer service is awesome.

Good looken ! He does do great work . I had him do some thicker sets for me with g10 liners . Made the 21 feel so much better in my hand .

NICE one, Mist!
Looks way better than the rattle-can job on my BK-15 scales. ;)
great gift!

Joe does phenomenal work. I have set of his large scales on my BK21. They look and feel great.

Thanks, Yeah I have yet to see any of his work that didn't impress me. The man is definitely a true craftsman.

Those look great. Love that orange burlap micarta...sorry, tangerine ;)

LOL, yeah, that's just what Dylan decided to name this color. I wish they would make the electric orange again! I am getting some make for another Becker out of some of their electric plum for another BK-16 for another friend.

I have a couple of sets of his scales for full size beckers. They are fantastic.

Thanks for that. I haven't tried those yet. I may have to get some for a BK-4

I agree 100%.

You are not the only one to voice that opinion, and that may be happening in the near future :)

Yes he does. I have ones with liners for other knives, and even some really complex scales for yet another. The man really is an artist, very creative.

Thanks man. LOL, if I remember right, your's aren't so shabby. There is more to it than this, but this is where I started. She is an impressive girl. She has been a librarian, and librarians are among my childhood heroes, since high school and at 24 just graduated with her Masters of Library Science. She lives in an environment known for it's natural disasters in CA, and is FEMA C.E.R.T. certified. She studies new survival skills to the point of understanding and then incorporates them into workshops she teaches in her community. We have spent a lot of hours going over certain aspects of survival and variations on themes for differing environments in sort of a correspondence course on survival studies the last several months. I have gathered several pieces of quality gear for a kit for her. Items I know from experience can take the abuse of class instruction.

I agree, he does. Next up will be a few sets of BK-11 scales. Like me, she prefers beers that don't have twist off caps :)

mistwalker, How do joe's scales for the tweeners compare to the Kabar micartas? Are they wider to fill up your hand or same thickness contour?

Do they need liners added to make them wider/thicker?

.

Sorry I am late in getting back to this. Life has been hectic lately. I'm not sure they are fuller, but they feel better to my hand. I'll do some side by side pics when I get back in.

Actually yes they are slightly thicker and more hand filling than the stock scales, or at least the four I have are. I actually have a couple of spare sets if anyone is interested. I got a couple in natural canvas, then had him make some in special colors for me instead.
