What are you using on your CV20 blades? I haven't had much luck with the Sharpmaker rods which I have the diamond, medium , fine and Xfine. Would like to achieve the level of the original edge which seemed pretty toothy. Tried the diamond rods but that didn't result in an acceptable edge (maybe to coarse?). Moving to the medium and then the fine rods didn't improve it.

What knife is it? The diamond rods will put a very nice toothy edge on a knife, you just have to use very, very light pressure so you don't leave deep scratches. I've been using a 325 grit diamond stone (coarser than the sharpmaker rods) and it is very toothy yet hair popping and paper towel slicing sharp. It's all in the pressure you use.

Also make sure you are hitting the apex by using sharpie on the edge.

It's a ZT 640. I use a sharpie on all the new knives I get to make sure to hit the Apex. I have no problem getting SV30 or 35 razor sharp but can't get the CV20 to co=operate. Do you happen to know what they use at the factory on the edge?

ZT says they do 18-22 degrees, but I've had ZT's come with near 45* inclusive angles. I always reprofile them to around 15* per side or so. I've done a few on the sharpmaker, and it will take a little while even with the diamond stones, but it is very doable.

I will say my 0456cf came with about a 15* per side edge though. Was very impressed with it, and my sprint Bareknuckle came with a very good edge as well. Maybe Kershaw/ZT are putting more acute angles on knives now, or I just got lucky.

Ya I started to reprofile it using a sharpie marker to see where metal was being taken off. It was pretty good and probably in their stated 18-22 degrees. I've now gone back to my diamond stones and have got the edge back to shaving sharp. I'll leave the Sharpmaker for the kitchen and cheaper knives. The diamond stone I used was a 600 and then a few passes on the strop did it for me.

My only knife in 20CV is a Spyderco Mule with a high straight grind . Takes a very fine edge almost like 52100 on DMT fine/ultrafine hones.

Diamond matrix stones only on my 20CV/M390/204P (not sure I have 204P right now). I suppose you could get them sharp with non-diamond stones, but I wouldn't want to try. I'm not familiar with the Sharpmaker diamond stones. Surface mount diamond stones can leave scratches that are hard to remove, which is one of the reasons I prefer matrix stones. These steels take a great edge.

Currently using EdgePro matrix stones. Have decided which matrix bench stones to get, but I need some sooner rather than later.
