I've been given what I believe is a CVA kit Bowie that has been through a flood. I got the rust off before the pitting became serious, but it's there, nonetheless. I see no mf'g markings at all on the blade. My question is, can I somehow remove the pitting? I understand that the results won't be perfect, just want to make it look better than what it is. Thanks!
John

You will have to remove the surface of the blade to a level below the pits, and then repolish it.

Is this the knife?

I got a kit version back in the 1970s when I first got into muzzleloading.

The blade is carbon steel and holds an edge fine. To be honest I never used it much as it is not the most practical of knives for most purposes. The characteristics of the steel wasn't a big talking point back when I bought it.

Thanks for all the help guys! 2Many, it appears to be the same as yours, but the butt of mine had a brass cap screw that extended beyond the handle; perhaps it wasn't screwed all the way on. Would sand-blasting remove the metal that needs to be removed? Thanks!

John

Mine had the screw as well - a big cylindrical brass one that screws to the tang and holds it all together. I filled the handle with epoxy before I put the butt cap on then filed off the screw flush with the but after it was all assembled and set.

sandblasting would remove just the rust but it would leave the blade open to more rust. you would be better off with a satin finish on the blade after removing all the pits. can you post some pictures of the knife to show how bad it is?
