I'm new to the knife scene and there is definitely a lot to know in terms of types of steel and their applications so it can a little overwelming. I'm looking for a general purpose every day carry utility knife that will remain sharp the best. Is the VG-10 (endura) or the 13C26 (cyclone) more up to that task?

thanks

Two nice choices for sure. I won't get into steel specifics, as there are others here who know more about that than I, but I have both knives and love them both (my Endura is SS). I think that the Endura rides in the pocket a little better, and there have been some noted issues with the AO spring on the Cyclone. Still, I carry the Cyclone way more than I do the Endura. I don't need to sharpen either of them very often.

The Endura is timeless. The design is refined over two decades. It carries great, feels great, great steel, edge geometry, etc. You can't beat it. It's the flagship model of Spyderco, which, IMO, is the best folder manufacturer in the business.

AH, don't let the Spyder freaks (I myself just traded for an Endura 4 because I love them) push you around. Aside from brand names, it comes down to what you want. The Cyclone is one of the better AOs because it does not have a flipper, which forces you to change grips. As for EDC, you won't notice a difference in steels (admitily the VG-10 is the winner). One thing to be wary about, the FRN handles of the Endura are rough, and lockbacks always have some vertical blade play. The Endura is an awsome working knife, and the Cyclone will be a sweet knife to show other people.

BRG E4 :D

The British Racing Green Endura 4th generation has a solid ZDP-189 blade that will stay sharp for a very long time, and it really isn't too hard to sharpen either. I'm still not sure how they manage that. I've never tried the 13C26 steel, but ZDP leaves VG-10 in the dust. ;)

I've carried my SS Endura for a long time. It's of the AUS-6 variety.
I know the VG-10 is a better steel so I don't see a problem with a new Endura at all.

All in all, I think you'll be happy with either one.
