CycloneTiZDP or Mini Manix

What kind of work do you do? What kind of cutting chores do you usually do with your EDC?

I'm an electrician in the construction trade and the knife will be used for cutting tapes, cardboard, as well as stripping large cables. It will be in all types of enviroments from dusty, to water filled trench's..but I have a Spyderco Native that I use as a beater in the trenches. The knife will be used as a knife, I have already have a hammer;) ,chisel, and a number of hand tools that I carry. I'm just looking for a more durable knife for the long hall.

Thanks
Dave

that zdp edge on the cyclone will keep that sharp edge for a long time. much longer than the steel on the manix

It's give and take on those steels. If you let either of them get dull, you're in for a headache getting them sharp again. You're going to need to continually touch them up for optimal use regardless. The ZDP will need to be touched up less often, but if that gets dull you'll have a harder time getting it sharp again than with the S30V.

I personally woud go for the Manix if the size and heft isn't an issue and if you're going to use it for prolonged periods. It's a lot more comfortable in the hand IMHO. Not to say that the Mini Cyclone isn't comfortable.

I'd go with the Cyclone if you like slimmer profiles, lighter weight, you won't be using thick gloves and you enjoy the extra time that the ZDP wil stay sharp over S30V. If you like AO, it can be fun at times, but I got tired of it pretty fast. It's not that I dislike AO, I just don't really care either way.

Both are great knives from great companies. I like the Mini Manix over most folders, including the Mini Cyclone.

I really like the slim profile on the Cyclone, but at the same time I like the heft of the mini-Manix! I would think that you"ll come out a winner with either choice you make.

Hi Dave, I've been doing elec. work, mostly rough-ins on new housing. I've found the AO a helpful feature on the Mini-Cyclone. Usually where you have to concentrate on which connection is going where, and you have a handful of wires. That combined with the ZDP edge and its small size.

I think that for that kind of cutting I would prefer the Manix. Many years ago I worked as an electrician. I still have my Kleins. I remember that all my knives got pretty hard use. ZDP189 is made for slicing, and it excels at that. But I remember doing lots of cutting where I had a fair amount side pressure on the blade. I would expect the S30V will hold up to that better than the ZDP189.

Thanks for the input, I'm going with the Cyclone ZDP. Not a huge fan of the speedsafe, but I do like the switch:thumbup:, which gives me the speedsafe or manaual option. I also have a Spydie Para Military to hold me over until I get some more cash together for the Mini Manix.

Thanks
Dave
