I know a few people runs cut (legal length of coarse) down shotguns or short smoothbore slug guns On a whim I picked up a box of federal black cloud steel #2's off the clearance rack .they are loaded with federals flight control wads. These things throw a honest modified choke pattern out of my H&R smooth bore slug gun . I was averaging 36 pellets on a 9" paper plate at 25 yards with #2 shot there are not a whole bunch of pellet in that loads. I we could get federal told load these wads in field loads that didn't kick the Bejesus out of you. it would up the preformance in these style shotguns

Those little H&R's make great guns.!

One way to take real advantage of the cyl. bore, is to control the choke with the velocity of the load. This is how they did it back in the fowling piece days of black powder. With the same load od shot, a 2 11/2 or 3 dram charge will shoot a tighter pattern than with a 3 1/2 dram.

I only know this as a friend is really into black powder, and he makes hs shotgun shoot either cal. bore, or even full choke, depending on how much powder is used.

H & R does make great guns. We own 2 & love them both. .223 bull barrel & 12 Ga rifled bull barrel.

I have shot enough muzzle loader shotguns to know how to do that A stiffer wad cup and harder plasic in the petals make a difference too.
This flite control stuff produces better patterns than I can make by adjusting speed and wadding. I wish they would sell the wads for reloading this is over the counter stuff that is high speed and like adding 2-3 steps tighter choke It ain't cheap but after patterning the gun It just gets shot at game a box or two will get me through the fall. I'll hunt close and use game loads and target stuff most of the time . And keep a handfull of the good stuff to reach out if I need to.

I have a 20 ga H&R standard weight rifled gun I hand load .625 full bore hard cast round balls at 1260 f.p.s. with iron sights I can head shoot small game out to 40 yards and shoot 4" groups at 100 yards for about the cost of cheap slugs

About 25 years ago I bought a fairly inexpensive Savage side-by-side 12 gauge at a pawn shop and promptly put it in a miter box and cut the barrels down to 18 1/4". Zero choke!

The idea was a gun that would work on grouse and rabbits in very dense forest where you only have a second to get a shot off before they are out of sight. I wanted something that would swing fast and throw a wide pattern. I opted for a double-barrel because they end up being about four inches shorter than a pump with the same barrel length.

That gun has been one of the most consistently useful weapons I've ever had. It's a game-harvesting machine so long as they flush up close, which frankly is the only way I can bag them regardless of the weapon.

With a dove load in the right barrel and a slug in the left barrel I felt a bit better hunting grouse in grizzly country.

With buckshot it patterns as well as my cylinder-choked 870 barrel out to about 20 yards. At 30 yards it patterns quite a bit worse. The same woods that hold grouse and rabbits hold white tail deer, and close-in shots with buckshot work well. With birdshot in one barrel and buckshot in the other you're pretty much guaranteed to fill the pot with something.

Some would say that you'll mistake the triggers and end up putting a load of #8 shot into a deer or buckshot into a grouse, but it's never happened, and frankly I don't think it ever will.

If I'd never used that gun and someone suggested one I'd probably laugh at them, but it's really been an excellent all-around gun.
