Recently finished Christmas gift for my girlfriend, thought it was cool enough to warrant it's own thread.

Main body is 5/6oz Herman Oak #2 cut, end caps are two layers of 9oz. glued together with a band of 7oz. around the outside. Stitched with blue Tiger thread, hardware is mostly from a bag I got at Goodwill.

The shoulder strap is easily removed and is designed to be an emergency use dog leash (girlfriend is a dog person... I am not). The top handle can also be removed in a few seconds without tools as it's only attached with sam brown studs, meaning both the strap and the top cap can be easily replaced/fixed over time.

Bunch of mistakes, but considering this is my own design, the first time I've ever made a bag, and the most complex thing I've ever made period... I'm very happy with how it all turned out.

Happy New Years everybody!

Very nice work. As I've mentioned before your eye for detail really comes through in this. I also like the replace ability of parts that might get worn. I've built this into one of my holster designs and one of my rifle scabbard designs. Really like the dog leash idea, clever.

Thanks guys.

The ability to replace stuff came about in the design phase, I had originally planned on having the closure strap sewn to the top cap, but had nightmares about something not fitting right and being impossible to replace or modify.

Kings, for the most part it'll be doing purse duty. But we do a lot of hiking and camping, so I'm gonna rig up some straps so she can securely attach it to her backpack. I have to admit, I like it so much I'm gonna make one for myself in a slightly larger "messenger bag" size.

I am really impressed with the whole project. Design A+. Execution A++, Fit and finish A+++. The rolled side seams are really a fine touch.

So a few months back our 20 year old daughter is heading up the hill to visit us. Her car breaks down in an area without cell phone service. Fortunately she's on the freeway and there are call boxes. She walks back about thirty yards to the nearest one and calls the CHP. They start a unit and a tow truck and call us. We start heading down the hill to her. Meanwhile a guy stops in front of her car and starts approaching Alyssa asking if she's alright does she need help etc. As he passes her car it starts rocking violently because Lilly is trying to get to him. Think John Wicks' dog in John Wick 2 and that is Lilly, a massive, blue pit. He backs off and leaves. I see him back at his car as we pass by on the other side going to where we can turn around to get to Alyssa. Now why was Lilly in the car and not with Alyssa? Because Alyssa had forgotten a leash. She doesn't need one once she's up here, we have acres and acres and acres. But she sure needed one then. I'm thinking of retrofitting all her purses with one. Thanks for the idea.

I was definitely disappointed that John Wick's dog didn't have any real role in that movie

Loving the ideas being generated here! My wife and I have 2 large pitbulls and I definitely should make sure she has plenty of emergency leashes around

This isn't far off from what inspired me to put that feature in.

I work at an automotive garage, and we have a policy about not having dogs in the car when we're working on them. Not a problem for 95% of dog owners, as we have a waiting room and there's a park less than 5-minutes walk up the street. But of course there are always problem people who don't have a leash with them, and predictably their dogs are usually the least well behaved and seem to do everything in their power to get themselves run over or just generally give me grey hairs.

At some point, I'm going to make a beautiful dog leash, something that uses all my skill, and have stamped into it "I'm a bad dog owner and forgot my leash" and keep it at the shop as a loaner.

So, while the girlfriend is a good dog owner, and has never forgotten their leashes, I wanted to give her something that might come in handy for her, her pup, and maybe some grey-haired service manager somewhere...
