I just returned from an unplanned trip to the Czech Republic. Most of my time was spent with my better half's family in the city. We got a chance to get away for a day and thought I would share a few photos.

The country is beautiful and just beginning to green up. Being from Utah I am used to Brown and dry, the forests were thick and humid.

Came across this Pod

Apparently from this tree

We heard quite a few woodpeckers in the distance then came across this

I found it hard to believe that a little bird could do that, the holes were over my head almost out of reach. The wood chips as you can see were huge.

I took a minute to try and start a little fire, no success due to the moisture. I will have to work on that!

Next time I plan on spending a few days Camping. Thanks for looking

Very cool! Czech is on my bucket list... how was the food?

I've been to Prague, but never into the Czech wilderness. I know the Tatras are beautiful and very technically challenging, but iirc they're in Slovakia right next door to Czech Republic...

Glad to hear you got chance to trip out and see a bit of the local wilderness Ryan.

Looks you're in Beech nut territory. The woodland has been littered with them around these parts for the past month.
Plentiful fodder for the tree rats!

Very angular, they look rather like firing ports from a fortified building. I'm with scruff on the Beech nuts.

Ive been to Prague too many years ago....great city with a lot of culture and history. Never been in the woods though. Great pics!

Thanks for all the replies, Beech Nut it is!

I did some research and the Pileated Woodpecker will make square holes just like these.

The woods in Czech Republic is similar to the woods in Bavaria. I gonna go to CZ next week... the food there is absolutelly great.

Kind regards
Andi

The food and People are great, I probably gained 20 lbs on greasy meats - it was worth it. They also know how to enjoy their drink, which I also enjoyed.

is it safe to travel within Cz? i have heard some horror stories from some people i work for/with. they travel alot and they loved the history and etc of Cz but they mentinoned that the people (some ) were very very sketchy and that they had wished they stayed put in the hotel lol.. they had also mentioned about the massive problem of them taking pretty girls, drugging them. and putting them on the black market... forgive me if his is overboard but this was what i was told... the people that said this were americans, dutch, and german

Wow Hung, I have traveled all over the world and every location has similar "Horror Stories". I spent most days and nights walking 4 different cities with my wife and sometimes friends children and never felt uneasy or concerned. They do talk about the Police system being a bit "Weak" and a group they call Gypsies. I believe they are referring to the Romani People (WIKI INFO). that caused some pretty serious property damage in one of the neighborhoods.

I would not hesitate to take my children there and see the sights. GREAT people

Those woodpecker holes look VERY similar to the N. America's Pileated Woodpecker, and Oldrich's photo shows a distinct resemblance as well.

Sorry, I have to add my opinion on this... It feels almost offensive when just these affairs are pointed out. (though offense not taken)
These horror stories are BS. There's about as safe as in any other European country, maybe even safer... it's generally very peaceful here. And a massive problem with kidnapping girls? BS×BS! Of course it may happen, but it's most misleading to state it's a widespread problem or even a massive one. It's as possible as getting yourself in trouble when acting like a dumb. I can't stress enough how misleading all of this is...
Just come to visit and you'll see.
And since this is BladeForums: the good thing is we have the most liberal blade laws. You can enjoy yourself and carry whatever knife you wish (even those fancy OTFs) ~ a knife lover's paradise! It hasn't caused any problems so far, so that's probably why is it so... hope it won't change.
Anyway, I'm glad you people are interested in CZ. There's definitely a lot to see, esp. all those sights. They're literally everywhere - castles, churches, all kinds of architecture, sculptures, etc.

Here's a pic of the main square of my hometown - Olomouc:

And here's the a view on the Prague's quarter of Hradčany:

i meant no disrespect at all. thats why i wanted to hear it from the horses mouth bc i was skeptical about those overly paranoid people that told me this. made me wonder if they watched too much tv or something. however they are from Germany and the Netherlands so i ASSumed they would know something. thanks for proving them wrong.. it does seem like a very pretty place. the food and drink sounds to be right up my alley as well

Thanks for sharing everyone, It is a beautiful Place with beautiful People. I married a Czech so I will be going back often. Beautiful Photos Olda, I have thousands of photos but not too many related to WS&S...
