Anybody shot this? Not too much info out there on it.

http://www.7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo013.htm

Hollow-core (plastic core), 7.62x54r, gets over 3,000 fps, light recoil. Accurate enough; falls away dramatically at longer distances (which my range doesn't have).

Seems like 90%+ of my target shooting is at 100 yds & less. Also seems like, with light recoil, this might be good M-38 food.

 44.8 grain slug, blistering 3,500 fps out of M91/30.

We've a few Mosin shooters in the crowd. Anyone shot this? Like it?

It is ridiculous cheap, too. Century has it on special.

edit: man named Carl Brown has a pic of projectile sectioned. Hope I am giving proper credit; can't link to it.

You could fill the hollow with fulmonate of mercury.

I'd recommend against that.

I can't help you with the ammo question, AA. I've never tried it. I'd be interested to see how it performs.

(Watch the velocity -- while it starts off at over 3,000, it loses 1,000 of that in the first 50m of distance.)

Seems like it would be just the thing for folks who like blasting beer cans at 25 yards.

...or No. 9 shot, like a Glaser Safety Slug... not. :foot:   :D ;)

One of the main reasons I've been trying to get around to reloading this winter is to make some low-vel range rounds for all the milsurps. I like to shoot a lot, but a few hundred rounds of full-house 8mm or 7.62x54r kinda rattles my retinas loose.

This oughta keep my, ahem, pristine Finn M-39 happy for a while.

And maybe I can wear down the crappy bore in the M-38. I swear you can shoot a dark bore clean, if you try.

Seems like this would splatter like a paint ball - explosively - must shoot some frangibles.

Dave, PM or email me if you'd like to try some. I can spare it. :D

Dunno about the x54mm, but I bought a very large quantity of x39mm plastic core ammo years ago. Light recoil for sure, but the only ammo I've seen that managed to make my SKS malfunction.

That's a generous offer, Mike. I may take you up on it.

I used to dislike the recoil of the smaller M-N's as well, until I bought my Guide Gun. I now shoot the M38 when my shoulder needs a rest. ;)

Curious mind wants to know, what would the effect be?

Keno

I think it's an explosive. When I first read it, I thought he meant like the scene from "Jaws" where the cop puts liquid mercury in his hollowpoints. The effectiveness of that has been debated.

In a lighter note, what about filling these rounds with bacon grease, as an anti-terrorist threat munition? :D

Anyone else have a creative filling idea? Please keep them legal, but stupid. I would think small size shot would work... kinda sorta.

Mike

I have a couple boxes of 'em but never got around to trying 'em yet. I figured they would be cool to try on coon & possum at spitting distance. :)

Re the small shot idea - yes that works well.Tried it in a 375 big bore - drilled out a huge but safe hollow point - small shot and capped it with wax...it made a "poor man's" Glaser Safety projectile. An absolutely devastating hunting round ...er...a rather messy terminal result. Little hole in....BEEGGG hole out.I re- hollow pointed some 7.62 x 54R for my Tokarev while pig hunting once....small hole in....soccer ball hole size out - small pigs cut in half.A tad bit over the top...
Some shady nasty types in Africa used to use mercury in their hollow points...but that was a different time and different place.
