What kind of maintenance do non stainless steels, D-2 in particular require to prevent corrosion issues?

I have had several D2 blades and I don't do anything other than wiping them off after use. Never had a problem, even in Seattle.

It depends on the enviroment, D2 is one of the more stain resistant non-stainless grades. If the knife is kept dry then it should be fine unless the air is very humid in which case you would need to oil it lightly after rinsing with clean water after exposure to any acids or salt water.

All my carbon steel knife have a patina on them. This helps to prevent the blade from rusting so don't try to keep the blade shinny. Every time I get a new carbon blade, I would buy a pineapple and cut the pineapple up with the knife to get the patina. It would still rust, so keeping it dry after use is very important. Oiling it is also a good idea in wet condition.

A few people I know try to keep their blade looking like new or looking like a stainless steel blade. Not a good idea for a carbon blade.
