Can you harden D-2 in a simple oven or do you need a vaccum oven or protective gas or foil, what will happen to the surface if you harden in normal air?

Thanks a million.

D2 needs to be hardened in an oxygen free environment. Since it needs to be brought up to 1850 - 1875 F for a 25 minute soak time it will decarbeurize and scale away to nothing if it has oxygen in proximity.

I wrap in stainless foil with a bit of paper wrapped around the tang to burn off any oxygen trapped in the envelope. Excellent results this way.

Hope this helps,

I heat treat D2 in the forge, and I don't have any of that foil. If I start doing more with D2 I'll probably pick some up, though. seems like a wise investment. I set for a reducing atmosphere, that way the only scaling is from the entry and exit, when oxygen mixes with the steel. The most scaling came from the quench, though. It just needed to be ground off.

D-2 is a steel I have recently been fromilliarized with ,I have only done a few blade's in it but I like real well I dont however vacum harden it I take it to 1875 acc. to my oven which is within 6 deg. of being accurate and quench in a light tin box so air cant directly blow on it but I also only finish it to 75 % before hand to take care of the scale later on the grinder

Thanks for the reply´s, how thick are the scales from the heating and quenching when not protecting the steel from oxygen?

I will be trying this soon, and i hope for the best.

Thanks a lot.

It isn't more than a few microns thick, but you'd swear it was six inches with how hard it is. I had to be very careful grinding it off to keep heat low and preserve that heat treat.
