This is kind of off-topic, but I'm re-shaping some dies for the 150lb Bradley strap hammer (this hammer came with a literal ton of dies), that are labeled "D2 V", and I'm wondering if anybody has heard of any variety of D2 labeled as such in the past, which may be called something else now? i.e. some high vanadium D2 alloy.

I ask, because I'm amazed at how insanely hard these things are to grind. They're 60 RC, and it's taken me an hour to take maybe 1/16", with my larger surface grinder running new 36 grit ceramic belts, which are being eaten alive.

I roughed them using an angle grinder, and the most aggressive stones I've found, which eat damascus billets for lunch, and was also amazed at how quickly they glazed and how slowly they ground.

I've used a moderate amount of D2 in the past, and never seen it respond like this.

These were large flat dies that were dished and had lots of chips, they appear to be factory produced dies, as they're stamped to the hammer weight, but I'm guessing they're a lot more modern than the hammer, which is from the 19-teens. Considering the edge chipping I'm going to temper these down a bit softer.

Anyway, this is just curiosity. I'm wondering if D2-V, may have been an early name for some high vanadium super high wear resistant steel we call something else now.

If anybody knows anything, let me know! ;)
