Last night I watched a show on history channel on perfect crimes. One of the episodes dealt with the skyjacking performed by D.B. Cooper (which in actuality was Dan Cooper but a screwup by the press made it D.B.). While watching this I started thinking about it, I knew a bit but not a lot about it as I was only about 13 when it happened.

He obviously planned it very well, he had the plane fly below 10.000 feet, had researched and picked a plane that had a rear stairwell that lowered, had the plane fly at 170 knots (which just happened to be to slow for the at that time current fighters, too fast for current prop planes and helecopters to follow), and ordered 4 chutes so he could inspect and pick the best one.

Then he lowered the stairs and jumped out over a national forest, north of Portland, on a cold, stormy October night.

Now they never said anything, but he was known to be wearing a suit and tie, about a winter coat or any other type of luggage. So I wondered aloud, my wife commenting that I was nuts and probably the only poerson thinking this, what he had taken with him in the way of survival gear, clothing and other gear.

Now we shall probably never know, but has anyone heard anythign speculated, or a semblance of an inventory they might have expected him to have?

Lastly , what under these circumstances, putting yourself in his place, would you take? Knowing you were going to have to hide it, jump with it, and live from it afterwards?

Lee, I would guess that the best option that many of us would take is the "bug-out bag" or basic survival kit that's been discussed here on a number of occaisions.

I mainly posted to agree that there have been several occaisons that I've seen stories or programs about DB Cooper and the mystery and conditions of his just "vanishing" is really intriguing. Did he have help on the ground, did he have his pockets full of stuff to get him to civilization, did he have any sort of luggage or baggage with him, was he picked up by aliens before authorities could catch up with him? It's a great mystery for this forum to ponder.

Of course, there are people who claim to know him, see him, talk to him, and even be him, but then again, Elvis is alive and well and serving french fries at a Burger King in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

A full bug out bag would be nice, but remember you have to hide it so no one notices it in an airport, jump with it, possibly have extra clothes, , plus have room for $200,000 in $20 bills.

Kalamazoo? Drats I was hoping he was closer the the east side of the state.

Due to flight cancellations and other foul ups, I was forced to fly back to ND with a lot lighter load than I had originally planned on. All of it had to be carry on.

I ended up with a single duffel bag and a garment bag with my suit. Now this would have been plenty in the same situation. Especially if the duffel was filled with ONLY survival goodies and a couple of extra bags stuffed in for the money.

For my own kit, I had started with a small computer case, this decreased to a fanny pack and a belt case, which further decreased to a pocket kit. I still felt comfortable with my clothes and the pocket kit.

I have flown, meaning I made it through security too, with the computer case kit. This included a mag firestarter, slingshot, lead shot ammo for the slingshot and a 4" bladed folder. Of course, I had several other larger items that security wouldn't have even questioned. So getting onto the plane wouldn't have been too much of a problem with a substantial kit.

I would say that he also had assistance when he touched down. Walking around the Oregon woods in a leisure suit carrying two bags of money might have been an unusual sight!

But wasn't there some find many years ago, of a skeleton on a chute in a tree in the same area? It seems like it even had a couple of EMPTY bags nearby...
