I have a 4 D cell mag-lite that the batterys have leaked in. I would like to take it apart to give it a good cleaning, but can't figure out how to get the bulb/switch assembly out. Anybody able to help?

If you dont get your answer here try Candlepower Forums. There's a group of dedicated Mag modders there that I'm sure can answer that and a hundred other questions on Mag Lights. :)

But be aware, its an addictive hobby, as much so as knives, I'm in its grasp right now. :o I'm actually considering a SF M6, and a McGizmo.

Pull the rubber cover off the switch button. You can pull it right off with no tools, and pop it back on just as easily. Underneath it you'll see a thing you'll have to unscrew -- the tool you need varies depending on how old yours is; you may have to improvise a tool. Once you unscrew that you can push the switch assembly out of the body. If it's badly corroded that can be pretty durn difficult, but hammering on a dowel will usually drive it out.

There ya go! :) The grouchy kitty knows all! ;) :p :D

makes me want to dig into my 3D Mag...... :)

Grouchy? Nahhhhh, only gets mildly peeved when politics spill into W&C or if you do something real silly like report a spammer then quote the spammer so the cleanup crew has double work...:o:D

Not exactly. On pre-1990 Mag-Lites there are two steps. First is to remove the head and reflector. At the top of the switch package you'll see a metal ring with two spanner holes in it. Remove the ring, either with the special Mag-Lite tool or anything you can fit in it. Then, pull off the rubber switch cover. Deep inside the switch button, completely invisible, is a small hex screw. Stick the right sizes hex key down the switch button and unscrew the screw. The switch will then pull out towards the head end of the light.

Post-1990 models are different. They only have the hidden hex screw in the switch. After you remove that the switch pulls out towards the _tail_ end of the flashlight.

If you know who made the batteries that leaked they will reimburse you for the cost of the flashlight, or send you a new one.

I can verify that...once you lay cash down on a McGizmo....It's ALL Over. :D

Thanks for all of the advice. I did get it kinda clean with a long screwdriver. Part of the problem might be that the light also gets used as a hammer, prybar, ...............

I had a 3D that leaked. It was my dad's patrol light so I wanted to get her up and running. The problem I had once I got the batts out was that there was still some corrosion that wouldn't allow the switch to go out the rear. This was a post-1990 light.

Mag puts a spring clip ring in the light forward of the switch to prevent it from moving forward. I took out the clip out and pushed the switch out through the front. Then I took a brake hone and smoothed up the tube.

The light is sits next to bed now. Plus it's got all dad's cool engraving. Name, ID number, date purchased, etc.

i had a mag that the batts leaked in and sent it back to mag, they sent me a free new lite.
