I'll try to keep it short. Vern Six is a great guy. He let me come down and practice on his anvil last Saturday. I forged a big 9" blade out of some Salvati mystery metal. The blade turned out OK, just the right amount of distal taper, width, length, etc. Almost done pre-HT grinding, just waiting for some more 120 grit belts to come in. While I'm waiting on them, I wanted to start on the guard. I want it to be D shaped. I've never inspected a D-guard and can't find any locally to look at.

I've tried searching the forum but the letter "D" is rather common and I can't find much info on them. Can someone give me a little advice on them, common dimensions, thickness, etc.? I'm envisioning 1/2" wide, 1/8" thick, and flattened out at the handle. Is this about right?

Also, can a bowie have a convex grind on it? I still suck at trying to get sharp grind lines(but not as much as I suck at trying to forge them in) and at this point I might just have to lose them and I don't want a full-flat grind on a blade this big.
