D-Guard on a Busse?

I have multiple knives that have guards on them. Mostly "knuckle" guards intended to be used as a weapon. However the Busse's I've seen with D-Guards...I'm just not getting a "weaponized" vibe from them. They look like they serve more of a utility purpose. Maybe hanging on to the knife. Maybe protecting knuckles from scraping. Maybe something else.

As far as the D-Guards go...

1. What purpose are they supposed to serve?

2. I've seen multiple connectors...where does one buy those? Some of them look like pieces of bicycle chain.

Thanks!

Some go for the looks of the D-guard, some because it does help against scuffed knuckles, others for the "survival" point of having paracord, and some because a combination of the bunch. Plus, a little paracording is a hobby that passes the time. Do one, takes 5 minutes, you don't like it, take it off.

As for the "bicycle chains", those are monstly done by Mashed Cat, not sure where he gets those but very cool.

1. imo; I think for a chopper they are knuckle guards to keep from scraping/smashing, on my old hellrazor it was tight enough to help with retention. mostly tho I think its a cool look

2. I use stainless clevis'/anchor shackles, you can find em at a boating store

A nice "D" guard can serve to protect your hands while chopping thin or thorny brush , and as said before they look pretty cool too. The bike chain things are a replacement master link for bike or other type of chain .You can often find them at hardware stores just keep in mind the thickness of the blade you want it for when you look at them.

Hmm...a master link eh?

I like the paracord method as well so thanks for those pics.

1) Let's you "choke down" on the handle for more leverage if it's loose enough
2) Prevents slippage (especially on those pesky, but awesome looking, paper handles)
3) Provides 6-8 feet of extra paracord in an emergency
4) Knuckle protection
5) Looks really cool

The chain links are available at ACE/Best/other hardware stores, need a good size for a 1/4 inch piece of INFI. To me, they just make it so that i can be more flexible. I can swap this to my CGFBM, or go with a different color pallet for more formal affairs ;)

A stiff metal guard...Helps To protect one's fingers from getting cut off during knife fights and prevents slippage whilst skull crushing...I use these features daily, very useful for carnage in general...;)

I'm thinking I'll try out the bare paracord one on my CGBJ. IMO a combat/tactical blade shouldn't have one on if needing to switch grips. Plus I'd worry about the damned thing snagging on something when it counts...

As far as the master links, do they mar or scratch the contact points? Does anyone use buffers like small rubber washers or anything to prevent them from contacting?

Thanks

Realistically, rapid grip switching, same hand or change of hands, in a fight is more of a movie thing. I've seen experienced martial artists take advantage of a switch waaaay to easily. Can you imagine switching grips with an AALB? ;) Just my 2cents. ADDED: non-fighting situations, you should be able to switch grips in a controlled manner almost as easily with the d-ring.

As for getting in the way, i'd worry more about a long trailing lanyard than the tighter d-ring. Of course, not easy throwing with the d-ring, but throwing (though fun) is mostly for movies, too (though i have heard stories).

Hmmm... hadn't thought about the washers, i would think those super thin nylon washers you can get from the hardware store would be good. I was more concerned with noise, so i put a piece of electrical shrink tube over the link post and heated it up. Eliminated the sound completely, but i didn't have a back and forth problem (width), my issue was the post being smaller than the talon hole.

So yeah I just thought about it...if I put a D-Guard on it, it won't fit in the Mashed Cat sheath... bummer.

Forgot to address this... i do think it will eventually wear a coating, i'm not too worried about the TGLB with CF, though. Even if it does scratch that a little, wouldn't notice

You should be beating the heck out of it anyway, so what's the diff ;)
