Here is a D-guard I just completed. Blade is W's in a staggered pattern. A 2 bar composite to make the one blade (one bar lower layer). Blade length is 17 3/4 inches and overall is 23 3/8 inches. 1/4 inch thick blade at guard with distal taper to tip. All Damascus fittings and stainless shield inlay (both sides). Steel is 1080 and 15n20 and handle is African Blackwood. Kind of a bugger to build. Still trying to learn how to photo a large blade. Sorry the pics are not better. Thanks for looking.

PS: Thanks to Bruce Bump for some great tips on making the Damascus for the blade.

that's pretty cool.

Well, I can't keep a short blade straight and with a good finish, so I think you have created an outstanding Sabre! Beautiful and most impressive!

Now there's something you don't see every day! VERY nice!

Kind regards,

When making the Damascus for this blade, the 1st billet was to busy ao I started on a second and third deciding to do a composite. What was the bugger was after the forge weld (and drawing out to 1/2 thick x 1 1/2 inch wide by about 14") I had to bring them in to anneal in the kiln overnight. That meant I could not work on it anymore and I was anxious to move forward. So I ended up welding up bars for the guard and other parts. Next day cut into 4 sections and tack welded them into a billet then welded a handle and forge welded. Back in for the anneal process. But the next day I had to surface grind the billets then cut into trapezoids (a total of 14) and weld each together. All seams had to be sealed because I had to do a dry weld. Great tip from Bruce. Then I made the weld and ground off all weld from the seams. A bugger because I still have not seen the pattern and not sure if it was what I wanted. Once the welds were ground off then back into the fire and I forge the billet out to 24 inches. Bring into the shop and do a little grinding and finally see the pattern. I did the happy dance :). Next was to make the blade with out messing up that hard earned steel. I like this pattern and can see other things to do to it and I will be playing some more with it.

Dan that is very cool I wish I could hold it as I bet it feels real nice in the hand

Very COOL Dan:thumbup:. Since it was a bugger to build I'm guessing it was a blast :) and I know that anticipation your referring to. Kind of like a kid at Christmas opening a present. Is that chunk of steel gonna be socks:grumpy: or the cool new toy that every kid wants:D. Looks to me like you got the good present:thumbup:.

Mike, Yes its like Christmas seeing the etch for the 1st time. You know in your mind what you HOPE for but sometimes it just does not come out. I like this one and the avenues this style has opened up, I have other things I am thinking up. I dont know when, It's a 104 today. Will have to get up early. Thanks all.

Dan, looking at the D-guard short Sabre pictures I nearly create an email asking it's availability from you :)
Anyhow I'd cancelled the email just because I'm very sure that it wouldn't be released by customs people just because it's prohibited to import weapon to our country :(
Congrats to you and to the custodian to be for that beautiful piece Dan
Thanks for showing and telling :)
