Hi,

Haven't posted in a while, but I've been lurking. I hope this Holiday Season is finding everyone well and happy!

I'm finally getting around to getting my first Bird and Trout. And after looking, (and lusting), at offerings from the usual suspects, I've decided on the D.H. Russel. I really like the leaf shaped blade and off-set handle. Only question is, stainless or plain high carbon? The stainless versions are pretty easy to find, but it seems as if I would need to go directly to Grohmman to get the plain high carbon.

Does the stainless version hold up well to use? Or is the carbon steel a better choice for working? Would love to see some photos to.

I have a flat ground # 1 Orig and a # 4 Survival, both in Carbon. I like them both really well. The edges hold up well on firesticks, small limb cutting (walking sticks etc) and such....no really heavy use yet.

I did a lot or research before I bought these and decided on the carbon versions. I'm not around the ocean or wet environs so the trade offs of their stainless were not it worth to me. Lots of folks seem to get good service out of the SS.

Google returns lots of info on the SS vs the Carbon versions of these knives.

I have both a D. H. Russell SST and a Herter's carbon Steel Canadian knife that I use for big game. The Russell SST holds up as well to that task as the 1095 Herter's. The Herter's is older but the Russell has seen more use because the Herter's belonged to my Dad until recently. I don't think you will find a difference in the two steels for small game use (or big game either).
My collection includes a SST "Yukon Hunter" brand that I inherited from my brother and I can't really comment on other than to say it takes a fine edge. I'm sure it would be adequate for small game if not too big and thick (which I would place your choices and mine here as being and would go with a much thinner spine for bird/trout, given my druthers)

Hi,

Love the photos! The Herters' is fantastic. And the #4 looks like a monster!

I've been googling comments, which has added to my uncertainty. Too much information, which is too varied. Everything from stainless is better to the carbon is best to none of them can be sharpened properly or hold an edge.

Way too much fretting over something that shouldn't be so complicated!
