Have you ever thought of offering a khuk
with a D handle like on some bowie's. They were popular during the war of northern agression. The d-gaurded handle allows a more agressive attack and better defense. You could integrate a blade catch into it. With it being made out of brass it would have a tendancy to catch a blade. Just a thought I had while waiting for my fist khuk to arrive .

An Uncle Bill Especiale with D-gaurd handle ! now that would be a sight ( mouth watering ,palmes sweating ,heart beat speeding up)! With that up-swept blade ,
man-o-man what a knife for those
Riddle-O-Steel boys .

Hi Edd,

Right on! How's this one?

(Read Bishwakarma instead of Kami to be PC ;o)

If you check out the museum pix on the HI FAQ, you'll notice that quite some of the dedicated battle khukuris came with a strong guard (However, I don't like those handles...).

I'm pretty sure that the only reason contemporary khukuris always(?) come without a guard (or any rudimentary blade catching feature, too) is solely that they are intended to be affordable domestic tools without any frills. And even the Ghorka troops don't seem to (need to) train employing their blades against people armed with combat blades (and sophisticated ability to use them)...

The design above is geared to become my camp knive for the tropics (heavy chopping was obviously not on the priority list ;o). I'll post a blueprint of two more martially inspired khukuri/broadsword siblings soon.

I was thinking of something more western.
Instead of just a tang extention , how about somthing made out of brass . The top part would slip on then the handle and last the buttcap. This way it could be an option on just about any model . Just think about a 30inch kobra with this , or a heavy chopper that protects your hand when swinging in the bush . Sort of a Khukusis Kutless .

Kai Witte's design strikes me as both functional and elegant, as well as having a fine pedigree; it's extremely reminiscent of the 'pommel-hook' on the Greek machaera in the British Museum.

The machaera made for me by Ian Whitefield has just such a pommel-hook, and I was privileged to be able to watch him forge it.

Which brings me to my only reservation about this design; it involves a very great deal of time and skill, which must inevitably be translated into expense.

A straightforward separate knuckle-bow in the Western tradition would, I feel sure, be easier and quicker to make (I've made and fitted them myself) and therefore cheaper.

Funny note I just thought of -- when I was at BirGorkha tossing around ideas about the Katana with the kamis they wanted to put a brass guard on the handle! I told them I didn't think it would go over very well. Maybe I was wrong again.

Tom Holt has the right idea. With the traditional western style D-gaurd you have functionality , ease of manufacturing ( not that the kamis need it ), and low cost . You also have a modification for almost any model .

I'm definately in if its a brass D-gaurd .
Come on you guys , chime in with your thoughts .Our esteemed Uncle said the kamis wanted a brass gaurd for the katana , so we know they are up to it .

Hmmm... a brass guard on a short blade buccaneer katana. What do people think of this as a home tool for keeping by the bedside?

I like to have a room for variable grip position than simple defensive equipment so D handles are not my taste. But here's an idea. Kamis are great bladesmiths, master pounder of metal, there's a hope the D guard pounded out from the blade!

Decision is up to you, just hoping some contribution of food for thought.
