There has been constant loud sawing and then jack hammering from the next store all day. It is so loud at times that you can't talk over it. I am one that understands that re-modeling will make noise, but stuck my head in to see what we could do about it.
The first thing I noticed was a 4 foot tall stack of the 3'X3' floor carpet tiles. They looked like new ( former business there was only open about six months). I talked with the guy for a while about the noise, and he told me it would be over in about an hour, as they were tearing up the slab for new drain and water lines. I said that sounded good to me. I mentioned the flooring, and asked if he was throwing it out. He said he had given it to one of the workmen. He asked if I wanted any of the other stuff being removed, and took me out back. There was a big pile of track lighting and other brand new stuff. I asked what he wanted for it and he said he would help me load it in my vehicle if I wanted it for free. There were twenty 24" two bulb florescent track light units, 18 track spot units, 200+ feet of track and all the fittings, two white boards and marker trays, and a bunch of misc. things. I took it all. The track units cost over $200 each, and are brand new.
He said he was sorry about the flooring not being available, but was ripping out another store in a few weeks with the same flooring and will call me to take it if I want.

The new shop will have lighting...and flooring...to match any shop out there.

Now, if I had called the landlord or gone over and yelled at him, I would be an A$$ho!e and have no new lights.
Moral, don't burn any bridges. You may never know what lies on the other side.

Good score! Myself I'm a foreclosure contractor and come across all kinds of stuff. My most recent find is 2 24x14 grantie counter top samples finished all four edges and one side. Perfect for flat sanding and one is going in the kitchen for sugar sculptures or other stuff the wife does. A good portion of my files and hand planes were found also. Sometimes I even go to remodel jobs and ask for various scraps, often they are more than happy to give it away so they don't have to haul it off.

Congrats! Amazing what the universe will throw at you if you keep your eyes open and talk nice to people!

I like stories like this. Shows that being a nice guy doesn't always mean finishing last.

In a business setting ALWAYS be a good neighbor. I owned reptile stores. The shopping centers had restaurants. We had rats, mice, roaches and .... we made absolutely certain we had none of our rodents running loose. We sold only white mice and rats so when the restaurants trap wild brown ones we could say "sorry, that's a wild one we have white ones". They never trapped a white one in 11 years!

Having a good video surveillance system is important too. When a neighbor gets robbed or vandalized; video of the getaway on the sidewalk out front provided time stamp and face pic of the unsub.

Restaurants will provide free lunches to good neighbors. I'll bet the free lunches alone more than paid for the video surveillance system. Just as Stacy proved, other benefits abound. Kudos to you Stacy!
