Hey guys. Well rat did it this time. I got a HEST, and got bit by the rat bug, and furthermore, the fixed blade bug. I used to think folders were where its at, but until recently, why would I want to carry around an already broken blade (I know, old saying) when I can just as easily carry around a fixed blade that can take a million more times abuse.

I actually sold my sebenza today, like, the grail of knives for a lot of people, so I could purchase a few more rats. Crazy huh? Now its just deciding what to get, really wanting an rc-3, and an rc-5 I think..... Has the world gone mad or have I just seen the light?

If I just sold a great EDC knife like a Sebbie, I would be shopping for an Izula.

Welcome to the sickness.

Welcome to the RAT forum! Congrats on your HEST. If you plan on EDC for your next RAT I'd suggest the RC-3 or Izula. But if you spend much time in the outdoors the RC-5 or RC-6 would make excellent companions for that HEST. In the end you will no doubt have them all :)

Like the izula, but im afraid it wont see much time since i have the hest, the hest has been my edc for 3 weeks now... Anyone with both the izula and hest care to tell what they prefer? I have large hands, and the hest has a large handle, AND it gave me stitches, so I think I may have to stick with it.

Aww hell, ill get an izula too...

Looking for a nice baton-able blade for outdoors, as I see a lot of. What would be the best bet for that? rc-5?

The RC-5 is very beefy and will certainly hold up to all the batoning you want. I think the RC-6 is a bit more versatile as well as being lighter weight. Of course the RC-10 is in the works as well, if you think you can wait :)

You've seen the light. Folders are fun, but fixed blades are superior! You might want to check out the RC-4, it's a great "I don't know which knife to get next" blade. The Izula is also another great one, and it'll definitely make you a believer in fixed blades.

If you're looking for a bigger blade then go for the RC-6, the RC-5 is a tank but due to it's thickness it doesn't seem as versatile as the RC-6.

Good man. You did the right thing. People spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for custom folders that try to mimic the capabilities of a simple fixed blade. a 50 dollar izula will do everything your sabenza could have ever done for you.

I would recomend either the RC-4 or the RC-6.

I personally like the RC-4 the best. Perfect size, weight and capability for a belt knife to be carried long hours hiking, around camp, hunting, etc.

Another vote for the RC-6 if you're after a big knife. I went with the renowned Izula/RC-6 combo, and haven't regretted it one bit. Using the RATs are a dream, the only thing that stops me from selling my Sebenzas and other folders is that fixed blade carry will cause mass panic if noticed in public.:(

a pink izula will never cause a mass panic

Chris Reeve makes a folder second to no one in the industry in my opinion. He has set a standard a lot of folks try to get to but never quite make it. A good example of how a small company can make it by doing things right both with quality and customer service. His name came up a lot back when Jeff and I were creating the philosophy for RAT Cutlery.

Having said that we appreciate your willingness to part with one of Chris' knives to be able to purchase RAT Cutlery knives. Let us know if we can help. Mike

being you purchased a HEST , I would opt for the RC6 and then fill in the gaps as $$ allows :D

Congrats on the HEST

If you sold you Sebenza specifically to buy RATs, then you've got the cash for more than one. I'd go with the Izula and the RC-6. That covers both ends of the spectrum, and you can fill in the gaps later. With the HEST and those two, you can do just about anything that you might ask a fixed blade to do.

I'm not selling my folders, but I'm definitely saving my pennies for my next RAT. As I've said before, it's a good thing I've got an understanding wife.

Well, one thing my sebenza did for me that any RAT couldnt is scratch that sebenza itch, lol. Great knife, great company, high standards, the sebenza kills in every aspect..... for folders......

Now that the itch is gone, its time to cure some fixed blade diseases.... RAT is another company I regard as high as chris reeve knives (seriously guys) in fixed blades... Great knives, great company, high standards, and their fixed blades kill in every aspect... Prove me wrong..

Im thinking almost 100% sure, im going to order an rc4 this weekend on my weekly saturday trip to the local blade shop... I pretty much decided on the 4, for 2 reasons.. First, It has a nice blade length to be usable in both little and big knife tasks, and if I want to, its size will allow me to EDC it... Also, it comes in desert tan :).. Any input on my decision?

The RC-4 is great. It's the perfect middle ground in terms of size and thickness, and you'll definitely enjoy the knife.
