The blade coating will go along way in the protection of the blade. Also, if you take a few seconds to wipe the blade down, you will e fine. I have used a carbon blade (1095) while on summer vacations on the Wa coast. With a little upkeep,(whipping the blade down) there isn't much to worry about.

This is true, depending on use.

I grew up in a fishing town, salt water, and the byword for anything metal was stainless. If you're going to be near the water, in a coastal town, just be sure to keep the edge treated with Marine Tuf-Cloth or FP-10 or similar.

If, though, you're going to be working on - let's say - a seafaring boat, that steel is not going to do well being your edc carry and working knife on the boat. D2 is just not meant to deal with that kind of use. I'd get something stainless in 440C, S30V, or VG10. And put the Benchmade on the shelf for a while. They just seem to be going up in value anyway.

Also, the coating does scratch. We all know that. And then you'll have more exposed non stainless D2 to deal with.

So, depends on your use.

Also, though I know your post didn't originally solicit suggestions for other suitable knives, you may want to consider a Spyderco Pacific Salt for such usage. I own the smaller Salt 1, and the H1 steel makes it a really excellent knife for use in environments where rust and corrosion are a concern, not to mention a great EDC knife in general.

thanks guys. It was more a thought out of curiosity.

rifon2- where'd you grow up?

Padawan- I currently carry an atlantic salt PE and a VG-10 endura 3 SE at work (commercial lobsterman)

The places to be wary of are the pivot where it is likely that the hole is exposed bare metal and not coated like the rest of the blade.

D2 is the most stainless of the non stainless steels but it can be affected by the salt water if you don't take proper steps in maintainance. I'd recommend removing the blade and cleaning it and drying it every now and then if that is possible, especially if it has been directly sprayed or submerged in salt water.

oh, you know, it's a public forum, let's talk blades...east coast, anyway...
(just mentioned a bit of background so you'd have some sense that maybe I had some experience with this stuff)

and - interesting, considering all the knives out there -
one of my favorite edc's is a VG-10 endura 3 too(!)

Just took it out of my pocket

D2 is strong against the salt water. But it's just steel. In my expenience My knives made of D2 damaged seriously by the rain a week ago. Near the factories of my works it maybe exposed to acid rain. The best way is not to expose salt water, acid rain...
