We all know that D2 is not good enough for a relatively large blade. BUT in the real world, do we ever broke a 6 inch blade of 1/4" thick D2?

Kershaw outcast, 10 inches of D2 that I have given hell with not even a chip. I think the stories of D2 not beeing good for large fixed blades is a pile of crap.

Maybe I should say: some people says:-).
But it's a nice testimony on the Kershaw Outcast.

I don't own any knives quite that large, but I havn't had any breaking/chipping problems with my smaller D2 blades. Cheers.

I think there was an ontario rtak in D2 that had severe damage, that's more ontario's fault than D2 or the Rtak design though.

I think it was more an issue with the steel than the design. If I remember correctly, there were problems with multiple Ontario models with D2.

Yeah, ontario's heat treat isn't exactly stellar with regard to consistency. You can get away with that to some extent with simple carbon steels, but D2 is a bit less forgiving of improper ht.

So, guys do you think a slightly less than 60Hrc is better to get some toughness?

Not really, if you compair, how tough other steel grades can be at the same hardness level, i wouldn´t give a point of hardness below 60HRC for that small amount of toughness you would get.

Some ppl. have noticed for themselves, that for steel grades of that type (high carbon, high alloy) the point more hardness offers the better edge.

"D2 is choosen for its edge holding abbilities, not for toughness!" That´s what someone from Benchmade once told me.

Would Benchmades D2 with an Rc of
60-62 chip/break easily?

mini did,,,:(
just had to regrind the tip to make it pointy again

mind you ,,my blade fell from my hands from about 3 1/2 ft above the floor,,landed tip down i guess and the tip broke off,,,was not very happy
