I have a Benchmade mini-Griptilian and love it. Itis the D2 blade with the BK1 coating. I am going to buy another one. I cut a lot of cardboard and wonder if the 154CM blade might be better. I have not had the knife that long and wonder how the coating stands up to wear over time. i also use my knife to cut apples and so am constantly cutting and washing it. I am wondering if the 154CM may not be better over the long haul.

The only reasons I ditched D2 were it's tendency to rust (mine did), and I couldn't get as nice of an edge as my 154CM.

If you want a cardboard killer, a D2 blade with a toothy edge will serve you very well. If you want something easier to sharpen, takes a finer edge, and won't rust, Benchmade's 154CM is amazing stuff.

+2. And as for the coating, think it holds up fairly well. As good or better than other companies. I really wish Benchmade would make Blackwash blades.

Oh and I don't know why, but haven't had rust on my D2 Benchmades. Even on edges. Have had D2 rust from other companies though.

This one has seen a lot of use, and the coating is holding up good, all things considered...
I had an early Mini Grip in 440C that had a coated blade, and that knife got used hard daily for a few years, and it held up really well too...

Even though 154CM is considered the "standard" steel for Griptilians, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
Some say they can't get D2 sharp, but I've never ran into that problem.

I love the D2 from Benchmade, coated or uncoated. That is of less concern to me than the steel, which is what should be the priority. Coatings can always be removed or reapplied with minimal effort and cost.
