Hello and thanks for having me.
I bought a second hand First blood knife made by Greg Wall and it has a D2 blade. I read somewhere that over time the matte finish may deteriorate on D2 unlike the 440 .
Has anyone heard about or experienced this?
Im also looking forward to a couple of knives Mr Wall is making for me, the Mission 2 and the Lss1 knives.
Thanks

Unless you're living in a hut on the coast, the knife should be fine. If its just for show give it a coat.of oil or Renaissance wax every once in a while. If using it, clean.it & oil before storing it.. Mr Wall makes solid knives!!! Enjoy yours!!

Thanks for the reply mate .
What ever it was I read was more about something else to do with D2 steel not holding the matte finish as effectively as 440 over time and not so much about rust. If only I could remember the exactly what it was. Its only to keep in my collection and will do my best to preserve its new condition.
The other Wall knives being made are 440 and was going to order the FB knife in 440 but saw it for sale locally a little cheaper so went with the D2 this time.
Yes Mr Wall is a very good maker and im honored to get knives by him.
Ive got plenty of high carbon blades that I keep oiled and have no rust issues so far luckily.
Cheers

D2 IS NOT STAINLESS….it boarders on it but not quite….for that matter ANY so-called stainless, containing carbon, WILL STAIN/RUST.

The coarser the finish, ie, matte, blasted, etc, will oxidize much fast than a mirror finish because of the porosity in the alloy.

304 stainless is ‘rustproof’ because it contains no carbon and as such it cannot be hardened.
