I've the ontario RAT 7 (D2 steel) . Usually i bring it together with my other smaller survival knife for fresh water fishing (Deep inside in the primary jungle).

My problem is ; My knife i think is sharp enough, can easily cut the small tree branches. But It hard to clean up the fish with the RAT 7 without using batton. For me its troublesome to botton the knife. Previously, i just use a cheap 2 dollar knife or a cheap parang (machete) without any bottoning.

Any comment?

what the heck kind of freshwater fish do you need to baton to cut?

That fish must be one tough SOB, whatever it is... One of these suckers, perhaps?

I was thinking snakehead or something with either a tough scaly exterior or large bones maybe? In that case you may need a knife that won't flex just to punch through the skin and along the spine to get you started but to fillet the fish correctly after that, you will likely need a thin blade that maybe flexes just a bit so you can fillet right up against the inside of the skin.
