D2 Heat treat

D-2 needs to soak at 1850 degree's for a number of minutes, I believe around 10 minutes. You will be able to get it hard but its going to be along ways from being right.
 
Correct. I just finished one: 1850 F / 17 minute soak. Alloy steels require comparatively long soak times and a rather tight austenitizing window temperature. Send her off.

I use Uddeholm's heat treating specs for D2 and they have a 40 minute soak for D2 at 1850°F, and 30 minutes at 1885°F. I split the difference at 1870°.
