Sorry if this has been answered four hundred times already.
I have noticed that quite afew people use D2, and was wondering if it was any good for folders.
I don't know alot about the composition of it either so any info on that or where I can look at that would be appreciated.

d-2 is nice for edge holding, you may want to try m-2 (high speed steel) if there won't ever be alot of force on the sides, but it'll hold an edge longer. i'm buying some barsatock soon, you can get it from huff steel.

D-2 is very good steel. My friend demostrating edgeholding of D-2 blade very impressive - he chopping steel nail without damage of edge. He won bet (stake???) - he shaved after nail chopping with the blade.

i just finished a small skinner from d-2 it's nice stuff, depending on the edge degree that you shapened it on you can shave. i'm gonna try out m-2 sometime in january. it'll take a finer edge. everbody says it's rusts like crazy, but i have tools made from it and they rarely rust. if you need rust resistance and edge holding, try 440v or 420v. 420v costs more.

Thanks guys,
I use my knives pretty hard sometimes so the D2 sounds great for its toughness. How is its rust resistance? I don't mind if it gets a little discolored, but I don't want it to rust away between sharpening. It would be used for general utility and not in a saltwater enviroment or anything like that.

Thanks,
I just ordered ATS34 for this one because I knew it was pretty good stuff. I'll have to see about 440V for the next one. It seems to be pretty popular.
