well, since Moose went and crushed my hopes of using my 1272:D, ive been looking at some of Kabars other offerings. one that has caught my eye is one of the D2 Extreme models, but ive never had a large knife with a D2 blade.

the few folders ive had/have are tough as nails but are obviously a bit more tedious to sharpen. what system do the members here use to shapen theirs? i have various stones, a spyderco tri, and the lansky set with 5 different stones from extra course to extra fine. i should be ok...right? LOL

the other one that im really considering is the Big Brother...theres just something about that huge knife. i have many 1095 knives and have always been happy with its performance...im just curious if the "upgrade" in steel is worth it... any opinions on this?

I used the white ceramic rods from a sharpmaker to sharpen D2, it worked fine. That paired with a strop should be about all ya need to maintain a good edge.

thanks everyone, i just needed a little feedback to persuade me....just ordered the knife. i'll be 38 on wednesday, so happy birthday to me

*add...if the wife asks me why i needed another knife, im gonna blame it on you Moose LOL...i'll tell her i was told that i shouldnt use my other KaBar :D

The big brother isn't exactly upgraded. It only has a slight amount of chromium nad vanadium in it. Kind of difficult to tell the difference unless you go through a very tedious, sciencey way to test the edge and corrosion improvements. Great stuff though. If you have a MKII USMC made in the last few years, it has the 1095crovan

thanks man, i wouldnt have known for sure, ive always had Beckers (Camillus and later KaBar made) and i honestly wasnt sure if there is a difference between the steel used in all these knives. with my Becker collection complete IMO, i admit i only have one KaBar, the 1272, so i planning on picking up some of the different fixed blades KaBar offers. the more "traditional" USMC will be my next one, and i have no clue after that...maybe the Big Brother or one of the new US made zombie knives LOL

i know im rambling LOL, i tend to get focused on one brands offerings when i get bored with my other knives/brands...for me, new is good...keeps me in the hobby.
now all i gotta deal with is the wait for my D2 Extreme to get here....ugh LOL

Blame me. Thats fine.

Bit if you have to wind up hiding it from her, send it to me, I gotta place she'll never look.

:D

LOL...it wont come to that, but i appreciate the offer. thats mighty kind of ya:D

figured id break the news to ya Moose, i showed the woman what i ordered today and she just shook her head, laughed, and said "you and your toys"... so i think im in the clear.
so it looks like you wont have to put youself out by having to take care of my new knife, but thanks again for the offer :D

Happy Birthday!!!

THANKS! gonna have a little halloween/b-day party wednesday night, celebrating both on the same night always makes for a pretty good time had by all, but a rough day at work the following day.:D i just dont bounce back after a night of drinking like i did in my 20s :thumbdn:

*add.. checking my e-mail, the estimated delivery date is WEDNESDAY....could a guy get so lucky? i sure hope so.

KA-BAR has been using crovan exclusively since the mid 70's actually

Actually, KA-BAR has been using Sharon 0170-06 (1095CV) since the 1930s.

actually when i mentioned "the upgrade" i was referring to the D2, but thank you all for the lesson. im not one to dwell on all the different steels/alloys out there.
my motto is, "if it works, im happy", and ive been very pleased with all my Kabar made Beckers. thanks for chiming in Toooj, i appreciate you taking the time to comment on my thread, i know youre a busy man.

and it arrived today...nice even grinds, quality leather sheath, and sharp as the dickens. i need to get the batteries for my camera charged, so no pics, but i am a very happy camper. the guys at deer camp are gonna love this new twist on an old design....a very very cool knife.

Oh, damn......

I gotta get one of these. Mostly to round off my KA-BAR collection, but more because that is some badass, American steel.

Whew, gotta chubby now......

Moose
