D2 or 1095?

Leaving aside rust resistance, which of these steels is better in terms of edge holding and ease of sharpening? (Specifically, I am thinking about Ontario fixed blades if manufacturer heat treat makes a difference in the answer)

I agree 100% with The Last Confederate. I have both and like both for different reasons. The D2 holds an edge very well but is not as easy to sharpen as 1095. For a 2" to say 4" skinning knife I would go with the D2, however, for a 6" or larger knife I would pick the 1095. Just MHO.

The basic questions has been answered, but I just want to make it clear that D2 holds and amazing edge. While I can't get it hair eating sharp, when it gets an edge, it holds an edge, and remains useful longer than other steals that I've had experience with, even when not as sharp (if that makes sense).

Both are fantastic steels with the proper heat treatment. I'm gradually moving away from S30V 154CM and other wonder steels in favor of both D2 and 1095.
