hello everyone, i've been in search for a smaller fixed blade to complete a trio I've been putting together
theone11no6.jpg

(wetterlings, leatherman and the gerber will be replaced with the new knife) The gerber works ok, and keeps and edge well but,.. I want a new one. I have looked at knives like the benchmade d2 hunter
http://www.sirmailorder.ca/show_pro...15&PHPSESSID=58970d590c0043e3188aa6876f2fe1c2

and the fallkniven f1

so what im asking is, which one should I purchase in the sense of comfort and quailty of steel. I've never had a knife in fallknivens laminated vg10, nor have I had a knife in D2, I've been a 1095 and 440c boy for a while and would like to try one of these new steels, there both around the same price for me and I would like to get some input for a decision.

Also if any of you have sugestions for knives from canadian sites around the 100 $ mark in 154cm, vg10, D2 or the like, please let me know. I'm sure my fellow canadians know how hard it is to find a reliable knife store in canada,( the reasons I want to buy from canada is that the border just messes everything up, customs is very mean nowadays)

anyways, thats all thanks guys.

Between the two that you mention, I would go with the Benchmade. It has a thinner blade that will work better for cutting tasks. With the Wetterlings you won't need to use the knife for chopping or batoning wood, so you will want one that is better optimized for cutting. If you want a knife that has a heavier blade and is more suitable for chopping, go with the F1.

The D2 should hold an edge better.

ohh the joy of an axe, and it allows a knife to do what they were made to do

We're not to far apart. When I hike, I carry a 14" Wetterlings hatchet, the D2 Benchmade drop point hunter, and a cabon steel mora. I have found the Wetterlings to be one of the best hatchets for almost any task, keep it! I love the D2 drop point hunter (these were originally made in 440C, so check before you buy). The Benchmade has a rather thin blade, great for cutting (don't imagine chopping) and an excellent handle and sheath, all made of beautiful classic materials. Benchmade does a great job on their D2 heat treat, I have come to find that D2 is the perfect outdoor small fixed bladed steel: It's tougher than stainless, it doesn't rust unless your careless, and it stays sharp with a fine toothy edge for absolutly forever! I'd say go with the Benchmade (if you can't tell), but VG-10 is my favorite stainless steel, so the Falkniven is not too far behind.

well I have to admit, the sounds and looks of the Benchmade make me want to buy it alone, and its nive to know I'm know the only one with this set up, thanks for the input michael and lambert, it really does help

I can't speak to VG10, since I don't own a knife made of it.

OTOH, I do have three D2 knives, and I've been so pleased with the D-2 that i doubt I'll ever try anyhing else (except perhaps M-2 if I can ewver find one that doesn't cost a small fortune:D )

One of these is a Benchmade 710 D-2. The finest folding knfe I've ever owned, by several orders of magnitude.:)
