Hey guys

i am debating between purchasing a d2 / foilage green military

or the new m4 millie

in terms of strictly dealing with blade steel, which one would you guys prfer?

which one has better moisture resistance? I am expecting a heavy rainy season and usually my jeans get wet and i would like to reduce the amount of possible rust buildup as much as possible

would d2 or m4 be a better option? I currently edc a bg-42 millie

CPM-D2 is semi-stainless and will resist corrosion better than CPM-M4. In my experience, it is an excellent steel. I dont have experience with M4 - yet.

I hope you are aware that both of these are very limited in supply so expect to pay a premium. ;)

YMMV but based on what you posted, I'd keep the BG-42 or find an S90V.

I live in the humid SE and have many D2 knives, and don't have a problem with rust.
Its not SS, but as close to stainless as you can get in a non stainless knife steel. Just wipe the blade with oil from time to time and I don't think you would have a problem with it.

M4 can rust fast, but you could force a patina to help protect it.

The BG42 you have is a great steel also. Are you thinking those would be better for you, or are you just wanting to try another steel?

I have both knives, and both are excellent. The CPM D2 version gets very sharp and at 62 RC has very good edge retention and pretty good corrosion resistance. M4 is even harder, gets even sharper, and has extremely good edge retention. It is also tougher than CPM D2. It does require more care to keep it from rusting. Never leave it wet, and it is best to oil it on a regular basis and wipe it off on your shirt after use to keep your skin oils off of it. My Mule M4 and my Gayle Bradlet have been very good performers, as I expect my M4/Ti Millie to be, however you do have to be mindful to keep the blade oiled to assure you don't get corrosion. If corrosion resistance is a main concern neither CPM D2 or M4 is going to be the best for your needs, though I feel they are worth the trouble of oiling them and keeping them dry for their excellent edge properties.

I can tell about how to force a patina on M4 or D2 if you contact me...email or

pm is best. I have a patina on my GB and like the look of the patina Much Better

than steel. ;) Thinking seriously about putting a patina on my M4 Millie!

Might be better off just getting a Orange Mili. If corrosion is an issue the S90V model is probably the best compromise (actually it's the best version yet, and arguably still better than the M-4 Mili, unless you really like Ti and M-4, which I do).

It looks to me that you "missed the boat" on the D2 and M4 Military models.

Unless a new run of Military model knives with these steels comes out, I'd skip them and waite for a new run of a "special" steel is made. Why pay hyped prices?

I occassionally carry a BG-42, a CPM-D2, and CPM-S30V versions of the Military. I won't be carrying my M4 version as I only have one.

The BG-42 is nice and I like it just fine - same with the CPM-D2 and CPM-S30V versions.

I don't think you'll be missing anything but bragging rights for most daily carry.

IMHO.

+1 on the BG-42 suggestion, possibly my favourite Millie for EDC
as for the D2 vs. M4 question, I'll post a shoulder to shoulder comparison as soon as my M4 arrives :D

well i have the m4 coming to me thanks to a very generous and accommodating member here on the forums :)

i will be getting my hands on a d2 as well

and then just a standard g10 version too
