I've never had an EDC knife with a D2 blade. How is it for EDC use. I spotted a Benchmade 710 that looks nice but it has a D2 blade. I'm new to Benchmade. I own a Mini Griptilan and a Mini Barage both have 154c blades. I'm not sure but I believe my Ka-Bar blade is D2 but I do not carry it everyday. I just started collecting again. I stopped collecting when Schrade closed down and moved over seas. I also have a bunch of Kershaw knives Case knives Buck knives etc..Didin't know there were so many collectors untill I found this site.

welcome to the forum.

i personally like D2, it takes a fine edge and it's pretty wear resistant.

I have the 710, Stryker, x2 Rants, all in D2. So far D2 is really holding a sharp edge on my 710 and Rant CP daily users.

Benchmade does a great job on their D2, and D2 is an excellent EDC steel if you use your knife a lot and dont feel like touching it up every other day. 154 is nothing to sneeze at though, great steel too.

D2 has been around since WWII. It is a very underrated tool steel IMO with the push to powdered steels, it is a classic like 1095, here to stay. Some complain they can't get it sharp, in my experience it can take a very good edge and hold it. It all comes down to technique and more time sharpening.

Search for longish term review Benchmade Bone Collector and you can read my thoughts about that knife using D2.

154CM is also a good steel, though easier to sharpen then D2 (less time consuming) and with propper HT is a beast of a steel. Search for Mud Puppy reviewm BUSSE did a great HT to show just how great a steel it actually is.

D2 is a very average steel. It loses its shaving edge fast, cuts for a good amount of time and has good stain resistance.

I don't like it because I value the Razor edge more than a knife that cuts forever. Its also not very tough.

with that said I carried a BM 710 with D2 for a longgggg time and was happy with it. But I have one in M390 now and its incredible

I have several D2 knives that get a lot of carry & use. It's a fine steel. I've never had any issues with D2 the way BM does theirs and my Keith Murr FB in D2 has done well so far. D2 takes a bit more time to sharpen but the edge holding and the toughness of the edges has been excellent for me. I use mine for warehouse work (nylon strapping, zip ties, computer cabling), home (paper & plastic containers, vines, light pruning), and hiking/camping. I've never chipped an edge or stained the blades. If I touch them up after some use they're pretty quick and easy to maintain with a Sharpmaker and a strop.
