Hey guys. Is the D2 steel that comes on the Handsome Jack and Lil Jack hard to sharpen? I know some companies use D2 that requires diamond stones and a days work to get a good edge. I want to get a Lil Jack, but I'm only equipped with a sharpmaker and don't want to get new sharpening equipment for one knife...

As long as you don't let it get too dull and you're not trying to re-profile, a sharpmaker will work fine for touching up the blade.

^yep. been keeping mine sharp on the sharpmaker white fine stones. haven't had to reprofile it yet, but when i do i'll go to my diamond bench stones.

Thanks for the input fellas. I don't have a ton of experience with D2 so all the advise is greatly appreciated....

Norton Crystolon stones are cheap and can sharpen the more difficult steel without issues. highly recommend. i wish i went with those first.

i have a two D2 blades, one thats really hard (i would assume 60+, they said it was cryo'ed) and one thats soft (i assume 58 or below), the harder one required me to get diamonds, that that was before i found out about the norton's. the softer D2 was easier to sharpen without diamonds. both of my blades dont have an advertised HRC so i dunno what they are exactly.

read the PDF listed in number 12 on this page for a better understanding http://www.seamountknifeworks.com/articles.htm

Mo2, great. No one needs a diamond stone to sharpen D2. A common Norton SiC stone or a 6$ ACE Hardware SiC stone works just fine to sharpen D2. These can reprofile it as well. DM
