I obtained some stock of D2 steel.

I was wondering what would be the best way to work this steel...

Countless hours at the grinder or forging it?

I mostly stock Grind...
you need a bigger grinder
if you're taking more than 1 hour on most any blade
from profile up to heat treat. :(

I had a couple of planer blades that I believe were D-2. I just wanted to bend the ends dowm to make handles for a draw knife (a wood working tool). Everything was fine until I dropped one after bending it and it broke like glass.
If I do this again, that is just to grind off enough to make the handle ends and heat to bend, can I temper just the bends? What color would be best? I kept the body of the blade cool, BTW.
Thanks, Lynn

planer blades are heat treated fairly hard so you should
draw it back more to soften it up a little more like a knife,,
and at the bends and out where you wouldn't use as an edge
these should be drawn back to at least spring temper, at about 1200 deg.
