D2 Tool Steel?

Has Ernest ever considered using D2 tool steel for his folder line? He could do a run with D2 from the same company who supplies his 154CM. I'd love to see this go down.

I don't know him, but based on what he has said & the decisions he has made concerning his knives I don't think he would use D2. Corrosion resistance may be a concern.

I wouldn't mind seeing some more S30-V Commanders in the future, though.

From 154cm to D2 is a huge step up imo, but there's no way you can sharpen it with a brick in field, which is big deal to Emerson.

I'd be interested in a version that way, one with the bearing pivot since it is already a departure from the uber-corrosion/crud resistant theme. Do the BT coating and corrosion wouldn't be much of a factor anyway.

Thanks gang.
With a little tlc, and BT, I don't see rust as a problem but like Ben said, sharpening might be but Ernest could remedy that with the HT.

I would be in for one. But, if the HT was done to keep with ease of sharpening wouldn't that kind of negate the use of D2?

I like em just the way they are. But considering the collabs dont follow the "sharpen with a brick" philosophy, D2 may just happen there. Sometimes think it would be cool if the collabs stayed true to the Emerson phosophy. Chisel edge and easy field maintenance instead of super steels, symmetric edges, and fancy fasteners.

All good tho!

Thanks, man.^
D2 does have a nice toothy edge that might be easier to field-sharpen.

I'd like CPM-154, seems like more of a natural progression.

That would be great. Maybe use that steel on the customs.

What's the price difference between 154 and CPM 154? At the volume that they buy steel in does it make any difference at all?

Do both steels heat treat the same way with the same properties at certain hardnesses?

Hate to be a naysayer - but I'm not a fan of D2. CPM154 would work for me though...

Just sayin'

Ben
