Can someone tell me what the yellow and green designations mean when used in reference to D2 Tool Steel, such as, D2 Tool Steel(yellow) or D2 Tool Steel(green).

Manufacturers sometimes color code their steels like jelly beans are. You probably have D2 from two different makers.

I don't know where you're getting reference to colors, but tool steels are made by different steel mills and companies. To identify the alloy for themselves and their vendors, the mills paint the end of bars with paint so they can identify that particular alloy.

The paint color on the end of a bar means nothing to anyone else. Different companies use different colors for the same steel.

So, <<IF>>> you know which steel company made a piece of steel, and you know their color code, you can identify it.

I noticed that TKS and Sheffields list D2 with two different color designstions is the reason I asked. I am a retired welder and in my little world, different color designations most of the time meant different alloys.
