I have gotten great advice on knives here...i am going to purchase a Rat 3, but it appears they sell a D2 steel an2 is and a 1095 steel version...the d2 is a bit more expensive....but which is the better steel and why ..if anyone knows....

Depends on what you plan to use it for. I would think 1095 for harder use. My Dozier Knives with D2 really hold an edge. The D2 might be better for moderate cutting jobs because of the edge retention. I am not firmiliar with Rat but have heard good things. I guess you could alway buy both.LOL

I got the 1095 version and for me, it's easier to sharpen when out in the back country for any long length of time. Heck, I can sharpen this on another stone, or hard surface if I need to.

The 1095 takes an incredible edge! Doesn't hold it as long as D2 but it's MUCH easier to sharpen and resharpen.

The Rat 3 is not made by Rat cutlery. The Rat RC-3 would be a better choice, in my opinion. Check out their website, and their warranty. RAT also has an area under the Manufactures tab. I just picked up a RC6, and really love the quality. I would go with the guys that deserve the business (RAT).

If you want to purchase a knife that is gonna last you FOREVER go with the RAT Rc3. It is in 1095, f&f is better than the Ontario, and there is added length in the handle. If you were to break the Rat-3 during use, you have to make a trip to the local cutlery shop to purchase a replacement. If you were to break an RC-3 from Rat, you have to make a trip all the way to your telephone. Heck I've even seen their warrant at work on this very forum.

RAT Cutlery is one of the best companies in the cutlery business, period. Great products, the best warranty in the business and Jeff, Mike and Shon are all stand up guys.

1095 is also my favorite steel. Buy an RC-3, or if you're feeling for it, an RC-3 MIL. I prefer canvas micarta.

Additionally, I believe the RAT warranty would transfer to new owners, if you ever decided to sell it. That may give it a higher resale value than the Ontario RAT-3. You dont see many used RC-3s on the market.
