I am at a cross road hear.I am working with D2 at the time and it can be stubborn when it comes to finishing.D2 can be brought up to a high shine but I prefer a satin finish.I know you have to get all
the rough mark out before heat treat or they will be a pain to get out after HT.I was looking at the make up in BG 42 and it seem to have enough chrome in it to take a better finish than D2 and it has a high enough carbn in it to take and hold an edge.I was looking for some input on the working ablity of Bg 42 Vs the D2.
Thanks for any help.

This one is a no-brainer. BG42 is a super clean, double vacuum melted stainless tool steel. Easily takes a super fine finish. D2 is known for its inability to take much better than a decent finish. D2 has an orange peel finish.

I found that BG42 was the easiest steel to cut and grind, that I ever worked with. In fact, I was able to bandsaw through the first bar so easily, I thought the supplier had sent me some bogus material, and I sent it to Latrobe for testing. I was BG42.
I see posts on other forums saying how tough BG42 is to cut and grind, and I wonder if they ever really used the stuff.

About the same as 440C. Nothing especially noticeable about it.
